According to a new study, researchers have found that people who troll<\/em> online often have nasty personalities. And, well, they like doing it. Trolls enjoy<\/em> trolling.Surprised? Not sure anyone would be.<\/p>\n

Nonetheless, the researchers found that trolls scored highly on a number of personality traits examined: Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism<\/a>, extraversion, disagreeableness and sadism.<\/p>\n

Trolling is, according to the researchers (Buckels et al., 2014), the \u201cpractice of behaving in a deceptive, destructive, or disruptive manner in a social setting on the Internet with no apparent instrumental purpose.\u201d People who troll<\/em> like to post comments to websites or communities online that cause trouble, insult others, and cause general mayhem, just for the sheer pleasure of seeing what happens when they do so.<\/p>\n

The researchers coined their own term for four of the personality variables they studied, which they call the Dark Tetrad of personality: Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, and sadism. Machiavellianism is a willingness to manipulate and deceive others, while psychopathy is not having any remorse or empathy for others. The researchers thought everyday sadism would be most conducive to trolling behavior online.<\/p>\n

Problem?<\/i> Dans une \u00e9tude publi\u00e9e le 8 f\u00e9vrier dernier, trois chercheurs du d\u00e9partement de psychologie de l’universit\u00e9 de Manitoba, \u00e0 Winnipeg au Canada, se sont int\u00e9ress\u00e9s aux trolls du Web. Ils ont interrog\u00e9 plus de 1200 internautes autour de leur comportement sur Internet et leurs caract\u00e9ristiques personnelles, en vue de r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 la question \u00ab qu’est-ce qu’un troll ?<\/i> \u00bb
\nL’\u00e9tude, nomm\u00e9e \u00ab Trolls just want to have fun<\/a> \u00bb – \u00ab Les trolls veulent juste s’amuser<\/i> \u00bb, apporte des conclusions plut\u00f4t effrayantes concernant le profil du troll moyen. Ainsi, selon les chercheurs, les trolls se comportent \u00ab de fa\u00e7on trompeuse, destructrice ou perturbatrice dans le cadre social du Net, sans raisons int\u00e9ress\u00e9es apparentes<\/i> \u00bb. En somme, les attaques sont gratuites et les trolls sont pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s comme de v\u00e9ritables \u00ab agents du chaos<\/i> \u00bb \u00e0 tendances sadiques, mais pas seulement.

\n\u00ab Dans l’analyse finale de la deuxi\u00e8me \u00e9tude, nous avons trouv\u00e9 des preuves claires qui indiquent que les sadiques ont tendance \u00e0 troller parce qu’ils aiment \u00e7a.
