But once you step back and see what\u2019ve you\u2019ve drawn, you can see something in it that reminds you: \u2018OK, yeah, I\u2019ve been going through this grief, and this picture actually depicts something about that grief.\u2019\u201d<br \/>\nBut there\u2019s a stark difference between coping and erasure, says Tim O\u2019Brien, a Vietnam veteran and award-winning author of \u201cThe Things They Carried.\u201d<br \/>\nIn an interview, O\u2019Brien said the effects of war cannot be cured, and believes that it\u2019s a dangerous mythology to think it can be.<br \/>\n\u201cOnce you go to a war, it\u2019s like cancer: you don\u2019t ever get over it,\u201d said O\u2019Brien. \u201cIt\u2019s always with you. It\u2019ll be with you until the day you die.\u201d<br \/>\nOn Saturday, O\u2019Brien took part in a panel discussion at the Herron School of Art and Design as part of the Spirit and Place Festival\u2019s Veterans Reclaim Armistice Day event.<\/div>\n<div>The panel, moderated by NPR\u2019s Steve Inskeep, invited veterans Jason Poudrier and Hugo Patrocinio to confront the challenges facing vets by sharing their methods of healing through the arts.<br \/>\nBenjamin Patton, grandson of Gen. George S. Patton Jr., presented a project produced by a former soldier who participated in his \u201cI Was There\u201d filmmaking workshop.<br \/>\n\u201cIn wars past, and in generations past, we asked vets to turn it off when they came home,\u201d said Ben Shine, Director of Communications at the Indianapolis Art Center. \u201cWe expected them just to be able to turn off what happened to them and get back to life, and I think it shows that that doesn\u2019t work. We need to open up pathways for them for healing and learning and to deal with what we asked them to go do.\u201d<br \/>\nThe Art Center was one of 26 organizations in the country to honor Veteran\u2019s Glassblowing Day.
