About ISTSS<\/h2>\n

The International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies was founded in\u00a0 1985 for professionals to share information about the effects of trauma.\u00a0 ISTSS is dedicated to the discovery and dissemination of knowledge about\u00a0 policy, program and service initiatives that seek to reduce traumatic\u00a0 stressors and their immediate and long-term consequences.<\/p>\n

ISTSS provides a forum for the sharing of research, clinical\u00a0 strategies, public policy concerns and theoretical formulations on\u00a0 trauma around the world. We are the premier society for the exchange of\u00a0 professional knowledge and expertise in the field.<\/p>\n

Members of ISTSS include psychiatrists, psychologists, social\u00a0 workers, nurses, counselors, researchers, administrators, advocates,\u00a0 journalists, clergy, and others with an interest in the study and\u00a0 treatment of traumatic stress.<\/p>\n

ISTSS members come from a variety of clinical and non-clinical\u00a0 settings around the world, including public and private health\u00a0 facilities, private practice, universities, non-university research\u00a0 foundations and from many different cultural backgrounds.<\/p>\n

Research & Resources<\/h3>\n

ISTSS publishes a research journal,\u00a0Journal of Traumatic Stress<\/a>, for professionals to\u00a0 share new research in the field. The research is reviewed by experts in\u00a0 the field. Its most recent impact factor was 2.326, putting it in the\u00a0 top third of all journals in the clinical psychology category. A\u00a0 quarterly newsletter,\u00a0Traumatic StressPoints<\/a>, features organizational news\u00a0 as well as news and features of importance to the field.<\/a><\/p>\n

Meetings<\/h3>\n

ISTSS presents an\u00a0annual\u00a0 international conference<\/a>, the largest forum for sharing new\u00a0 information on the field.<\/p>\n

Professional & Public Education<\/h3>\n

ISTSS is the only society to have published a thorough, science-based\u00a0 assessment of the memory of trauma that integrates clinical and research\u00a0 understanding. A consumer-oriented pamphlet has also been developed.<\/p>\n

Treatment Guidelines<\/h3>\n

ISTSS develops and promotes\u00a0treatment\u00a0 guidelines<\/a>\u00a0on the state of the art of all types of\u00a0 treatment.<\/p>\n

Worldwide Networking & Support<\/h3>\n

ISTSS works with the United Nations to provide education and\u00a0 resources to guide practice and\u00a0public\u00a0 policy<\/a> in countries torn by exposure to traumatic events. ISTSS also\u00a0 promotes excellence in international training for mental health\u00a0 professionals and others who treat trauma victims.<\/p>\n

Promote Excellence & Innovation<\/h3>\n

ISTSS recognizes excellence with annual\u00a0awards<\/a>\u00a0to researchers, clinicians, and\u00a0 outstanding professionals in the field. ISTSS provides training for\u00a0 students to help them gain expertise in the field.<\/p>\n
